It is unknown whether the Church Grim is evil or good, and is said to guard the church it lives in from devils or thiefs. They have their own set of rules which a person must follow if they do not wish to be killed.Ĭhurch Grim (Kyrkogrimen): The Church Grim is a humanoid animal (usually a goat, ram, horse, dog, or it can be other animals) that inhabits a church. However, if one manages to fully satisfy and please a Huldra, they will not be killed and will be blessed with great luck for a period of time. They can also lure people to her by her beautiful singing voice. They appear in the form of stunningly beautiful women, and will lure men into their lairs and usually having an affair with them before killing them. The Huldra (Skogsraet): The Huldra is a Temptress who lives in the forest. If the person refuses to do so, they will jump on the person's back and cry and scream continuously until the person goes deaf.
They will usually wander around the location of their death crying out for their parents and will sometimes beg passing people to rescue them by giving them a proper burial so they can rest peacefully. They are little, pale-skinned children dressed in white rags. Mylings (Mylingen): Mylings are manifestations of babies or children who were killed or left to die at a young age. They will sometimes also test a person worthiness by sending them on special tasks or errands that involves courage and wits. If they meet a person courageous enough to swim with them in their waters, they will treat them as their masters and allow them to ride on their backs and not drown them. The Brook Horse is usually in the shape of a beautiful horse, who often tricks people into riding it (especially children) and then drowning them. The Night Raven usually perches on top of a church at midnight or dawn, or whenever nobody is around.īrook Horse (Bäckähasten): The Brook Horse is a creature that lives in streams, rivers, or brooks. Sometimes, however, it will mysteriously watch over a particular person for unknown reasons. Its appearance is usually a sign of bad luck for those who see it. It can switch forms between a normal raven, and a tall, humanoid-shaped raven.
Night Raven (Nattravnen): A silent creature in the form of a black raven. So before one goes on a Year Walk, one has to be sure that he or she wants to see and accepts whatever will happen in the future. This will cause them to become depressed and often go mad.
Sometimes though, the Year Walker will see a terrible future in the upcoming year (for example: death of a loved one). During the night of the Year Walk, a person has to wander around the forest until midnight, where they go to a church or cemetery (or sometimes even both) where they will receive the visions of the future. The creatures a person encounters during a Year Walk could be either evil, good, or neither. During the Year Walk, they will also see strange creatures or beings. Over the course of a Year Walk, one must not partake in any food or water, and must not see fire or light (a Year Walk is always done during night time). It is a practice done by those who wish to see the future of the upcoming year, thus, it is usually done in Christmas Eve or New Years Eve. Year Walk (Årsgång): An ancient practice during the 19th century in Sweden.
